The Coffey family papers are those of two brothers. Vernon C. Coffey was a train porter who played an important role in the Brotherhood of Trainmen, Brakemen, Porters, Switchmen, Firemen, and Railway Employees, Inc. Cornelius R. Coffey became a pioneer in the field of aviation.

Vernon Carson Coffey was born April 18, 1894 in Brinkley, Arkansas to Henry and Ada (Wright) Coffey. He graduated from high school in Newport, Arkansas and attended Shorter College in North Little Rock, Ark. for a year; he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1938 from the University of Omaha.
